Miners Reading Club

Hitting the Books with Herbie!

The Sussex County Miners Reading Club supports students in developing and maintaining good reading habits.  The Children’s Reading Foundation, among many other groups, recommends that children read an average of 20 minutes per day outside of school.  Routine reading for enjoyment helps young learners increase vocabulary and comprehension, build empathy, and assist in the development of better writing skills.

Students who log 600 minutes of reading for six weeks through March and April will receive two tickets to a regular season Sussex County Miners game.  A student log helps students and parents track each child’s progress.

Over forty area schools are partnering with the Miners. Each will have a designated game to celebrate those who meet the reading goal. One lucky student from each school will get to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, while others may have a chance to win a prize during our promotional contests between innings. Highlights from the school year will be displayed on the Skylands Stadium video board.  The games will serve as a fun summertime reunion for each partner school.

Any child from preschool through grade 8 can participate.  Even if your child’s school is not partnering with the team, individuals may still enter and participate.  Please see the important links below:
