Miners Let Off Some Steam, Rout Aigles

Miners Cruise to 14-2 Victory Over Aigles in Series Opener
Miners take the lead in the top of the first after Maciel laid down a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error. D’Amato followed with an RBI single to give the Miners a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the first.

Miners get right back to it in the top of the second. Romero led off with a single, O’Brien reached safely on an error, and Walters’ sacrifice bunt moved both runners. Back to the top of the order, Mateo followed with an RBI forceout, scoring Romero to give the Miners a 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the second.

The Miners put up four in the top of the third. Ferrara worked a walk, Backstrom followed with a single to move Ferrara to third, and Berkey laid down a bunt single to score Ferrara. O’Brien also singled to bring home Backstrom, followed by Walters with an RBI single to score Berkey. That would end Simone’s night after 2.1 innings pitched, allowing 5 runs. Lachance came in and walked Mateo, and Maciel was hit by a pitch to score O’Brien. The Aigles would get out of the inning, but the Miners take a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the third.

The Miners add to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Romero and Walters both worked a walk, Maciel then reached safely on an error, scoring both Romero and Walters. D’Amato singled, and Ferrara doubled to bring home both Maciel and D’Amato, adding four more runs to the Miners’ lead and making it 10-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

The Miners continued their offensive outburst as Berkey launched a solo home run in the top of the sixth, extending the Miners’ lead to 11-0.

The Miners continued to add to their lead in the top of the eighth. Berkey doubled, followed by an RBI double from Romero to score Berkey. O’Brien was hit by a pitch, and Walters worked a walk to load the bases. Romero then scored on a Mateo sacrifice fly, and D’Amato reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring O’Brien to make it 14-0 heading to the bottom of the eighth.

Brothers’ night would come to an end entering the ninth with a final line of 8 innings pitched, 5 hits, 0 earned runs, and 10 strikeouts. Widener would come on in relief allowing 2 runs to score and striking out 3. Miners win 14-2 in the first of a three game set.
