Quebec City, Quebec: After a heart-breaking loss in the first of six straight against the four straight defending champions Quebec Capitales, they dropped the second game in Quebec 16-2 in a game that got away from them in the sixth inning.
The game got off to a promising start for the Miners. Edwin Mateo kicked things off with a double, and after a Gabriel Maciel sacrifice bunt to bring him ninety feet closer, a Hunter D’Amato sac-fly deep to right field sent Mateo home and gave the Miners an early lead.
But there’s a reason the Capitales are once again top of the pile in the Frontier League. Their overwhelming riches on offense yet again showed out. It began in the third inning as the Capitales gave Jaccob Casson problems with runners on first and third with no outs.
David Mendham’s electric campaign continued as his line drive single to right tied the game at one. Chavez Young would deliver Quebec the lead later in the inning with an effective sac-fly to bring TJ Schofield-Sam home. In the fifth inning, Kyle Crowl, the league leader in RBIs with 94, brought in two more with his two-run rocket to center-field.
Then in the sixth inning, things would go from bad to worse. The bases would be loaded with another no out predicament, and TJ Scho-field Sam would clean them up on a double to left-field. And after David Bendham’s second RBI of the day to make it 8-1, Jaccob Casson’s day was done.
Jordan Sesar came on as relief for Casson, but he would endure the Capitales’ sixth inning blitz as well. A poor error by D’Amato at second brought Mendham home to make it 9-1, a wild pitch by Sesar allowed Chavez Young to score, and lastly Yuta Hamada made it 11-1 on an RBI single down the third baseline. It was a seven run inning by the team with the highest batting average, the most RBIs of any team and the highest in runs scored in the Frontier League. They would add five more runs in the eighth to add insult to injury against an exhausted Miners bullpen.
Not an ideal first two games of this series for the Miners, but they have the chance to make things right in the final game of the series in Quebec before travelling back home to Skylands stadium for another crack at the Capitales in another three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 6:50 PM.
