ZAYAS EARNS PITCHER OF THE WEEK HONOR

SECOND CONSECUTIVE MINER TO WIN AWARD; THREW SIX SHUTOUT INNINGS

Durham, NC – The official statistician of the Can-Am League, Pointstreak, has announced that Sussex County Miners RHP Gianni Zayas (pictured) has been named this week’s Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 30.

Zayas becomes the second consecutive Miner to win the award, following Kody Kerski, last week’s recipient. Zayas, a Cuban native residing in North Bergen, NJ, was dominant in his lone start of the week. Over six innings on Saturday against the New Jersey Jackals, Zayas allowed just one hit and two walks, keeping the Jackals off the scoreboard. He struck out two and earned the win in a 7-0 Miners triumph.

On the season, Zayas is now 7-6 with a 2.64 ERA over 19 appearances, 10 of them in the starting role. He has struck out 51 in 75 innings.

2017 marks Zayas’ first season in the Can-Am League. He has previously pitched professionally for the Arizona League Mariners, with whom he made 15 appearances in 2015. Seattle selected Zayas in the 35th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft. He played collegiately at Florida International University in Miami, Fla., where he was 3-2 with a 5.60 ERA in 21 games in 2015. He also spent 2013 at North Carolina State University and 2014 at Seminole State College in Florida.

The Miners will open a road series at the Trois-Riviéres Aigles tonight at 7:05 PM Eastern time. The series can be seen live and for free at www.canamleague.tv.
