AUGUSTA, NJ – Sussex County Miners RHP Jamie Walczak stole the show on Saturday night in Ottawa by pitching the first no-hitter in Miners history. Teammate Reggie Abercrombie also had quite the week at the plate with a league-leading seven RBI. For their efforts, Walczak and Abercrombie were awarded by Pointstreak, the official statistician of the Can-Am League, as the league’s Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending on June 14.
Walczak no-hit the Ottawa Champions in game two of a doubleheader at Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton Park. The right-hander struck out five and only allowed two baserunners, both on walks to Sebastien Boucher, en route to the sixth no-hitter in Can-Am League history. Walczak struck out Francisco Sosa to cap the historic performance and was promptly mobbed by his teammates behind the pitcher’s mound.
In addition to the no-hitter, Walczak pitched well in a losing effort against the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Tuesday. Walczak pitched six innings without allowing an earned run in the back end of a doubleheader. In total, Walczak pitched 13 innings this week with no earned runs allowed. The right-hander only gave up six hits and struck out 11 between the two starts.
Abercrombie had a monster week at the plate to earn himself the Player of the Week honor. The Miners’ centerfielder led the league with seven RBI and batted .417 (10-for-24) over six games. Abercrombie hit a home run, a double and a triple during his award-winning week.
Three multi-hit performances highlighted Abercrombie’s week. In game one of a doubleheader against the RailCats on Tuesday, Abercrombie went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. He followed that up two games later with a 3-for-5 ballgame that included a solo home run and an RBI single. Abercrombie also went 3-for-8 with four RBI during Saturday night’s doubleheader.
The awards for Walczak and Abercrombie were the first Pointstreak Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards in the history of the Sussex County Miners. For video and audio highlights of Walczak’s no-hitter, please visit CanAmLeague.TV.
