Miners Outfielder Rubi Silva

PointStreak, the official statistician of the Can-Am League, has named Sussex County Miners Outfielder Rubi Silva as Player of the Week for the week of June 18-24

Thornhill, Ontario — In six games, Rubi Silva went 11-for-21 (.524) with two home runs and eight RBIs as the first-place Sussex County Miners went 4-2 on the week. On Tuesday, the native of Artemisa, Cuba, went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and five RBI in Sussex County’s 14-1 win over Salina. He had another three-hit outing in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday, driving in a run in his team’s 7-2 victory against Ottawa.

Silva has been outstanding since joining the Miners June 12, hitting .510 with four home runs, 18 RBIs and 13 runs scored. The 29-year-old also spent all of 2017 with the club, where he was the team’s most consistent offensive performer. He led the squad with 119 hits, 57 RBI and 53 runs scored while also tying for the league lead as well as the Sussex County Can-Am League record with 7 triples.

Prior to the Miners, Silva spent six seasons in North American professional leagues, reaching as high as Triple-A in the Chicago Cubs organization, where he hit .282 with 11 home runs in 2015.

Silva is the third Miner to be named Player of the Week through the season’s first six weeks, following SS Jarred Mederos (week ending May 20) and C/INF Martin Figueroa (week ending June 10).

Sussex County will enjoy an off day on Monday before beginning a series at home Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. against Rockland. The game, like all in the Can-Am League, can be seen live and for free at
