MINERS DROP SECOND STRAIGHT TO AIGLES
Ottawa, Ontario | August 9, 2016 – The Sussex County Miners mounted a late comeback against the Ottawa Champions, but it fell just short. Down 4-1 at RCGT Park, the Miners pushed across two runs in the eighth and ninth innings but left the tying one just 90 feet away. In the top of the eighth, RF Brenden Webb scored on 3B Dustin Lawley‘s RBI single to cut the lead in half, 4-2. With two outs in the final frame, LF Dominique Taylor got an infield hit, Webb drew a walk, and 2B Nick Giarraputo ripped an RBI single to get Sussex County to within one. The Miners threatened with runners at second and third, but CF Jay Austin grounded into a fielder’s choice that gave the Champions a 4-3 win. Sussex County has now dropped three straight, but with Rockland’s loss to Trois-Rivières, the Miners remain 9-1/2 games out of a playoff spot.
Starter Danny Moskovits tossed eight solid innings but took the complete game loss. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits, walked none, and struck out four. Dustin Lawley led the Miners offense with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, scoring a run and collecting an RBI. DH Carl Thomore added two hits and an RBI. Brenden Webb got on base three times and scored a run. Dominique Taylor‘s two-out single in the ninth kept the Miners’ hopes alive and he eventually scored to cut the Champions’ lead to just one run. In the bottom of the eighth, Taylor also made a great wall-crashing catch on Daniel Grauer’s long fly out to help keep Ottawa off the scoreboard.
Wednesday morning at 11:05 AM, the Miners play game three of the four-game series against the Ottawa Champions. Listen to all the action live on the Miners Radio Network.
