Miners Celebrate Sweep Over Aigles

August 2, Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners (50-20) used an offensive flurry from the second to fourth innings to defeat the Trois-Rivieres Aigles 13-6, and in the process became the fastest team to reach fifty wins in a single season. The team also tied the franchise record for most hits in a game with eighteen, and tie their own Can-Am League record of fifteen straight home wins from earlier this year. Audy Ciriaco also tied a franchise record with three doubles in the game, and David Rollins tied the franchise record for most wins by a pitcher in a season.

After a Taylor Brennan two-run home run got the Aigles off to a good start, the Miners would begin their surge in the second. Connor Crane drove home Audy Ciriaco to cut the Aigles lead in half at 2-1. Then in the third, Nick Zaharion would be hit by a pitch, and be followed by Danny Mateo and Mikey Reynolds singles, the latter also drawing a throwing error that allowed Zaharion to score and tie the game at two. Then Ciriaco would line his second double of the game, scoring both Mateo and Reynolds, to put the Miners ahead 4-2.

Sussex County would then bust the game open in the 4th. Breland Almadova would lead off the frame with a triple, scoring one pitch later on a wild pitch. Zaharion would then double and chase Aigles starter Tyler Garkow from the game in favor of Fernando Fernandez. Singles by Mateo and Reynolds would follow, with the Reynolds hit scoring Zaharion and making the score 6-2 Miners. Ciriaco would then hit his franchise record-tying third double of the game, scoring Mateo to make it 7-2. Jayce Ray would walk to load the bases and set up a Luis Alen sacrifice fly that scored Reynolds. Crane would hit a two-run double to make the score 10-2 Miners, and the scoring for the inning would finish on an Almadova single – his second hit of the inning – to make the score 11-2 Miners.

Trois-Rivieres would claw four runs back over the next three innings – two of them on a Michael Suchy home run, but Sussex County would add two insurance runs of their own in the eighth, the last coming on the team’s franchise record-tying eighteenth hit off the bat of Luis Alen to set the final score line at 13-6.

David Rollins would run his record to a Can-Am leading 9-1 on the season, with the nine win tying the franchise record for wins by a pitcher. Gianni Zayas won nine games for Sussex County last season.

Sussex County begins a ten-game road trip in Ottawa tomorrow as they take on the Champions at RGCT Park in the Canadian capital at 7:05 PM.
