HOLD OFF LATE QUÉBEC SURGE TO NOTCH 46TH WIN
July 28, Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners (46-20) raced out to a big early lead, then held off a late Québec Capitales (37-30) rally to take the third game of the four-game series by a final score of 11-7 on Saturday night at Skylands Stadium. With the win, the Miners have now eclipsed their win total from all of last season, setting a new franchise record.
Offensively, it was the middle of the lineup that accounted for most of the damage. Mikey Reynolds in the four spot had four singles in four at bats and scored each time he reached base. Batting fifth, Audy Ciriaco had three hits, including a double, and drove home a pair of runs as well as scoring three times. In the six spot, Jayce Ray had two doubles in his three hits on the evening, knocking home two runs and scoring twice himself. And hitting seventh in the lineup, Luis Alen (pictured) drove home four runs on the evening, two of them coming on a single in the five-run Miners half of the third.
Michael Wagner (2-0) took the hill for the Miners and went 6 2/3 solid innings to pick up the win. Wagner allowed two runs on five hits in that span for Sussex County. Soren Hanson (0-1), making his pro debut, took the Capitales as he threw just 2 1/3 innings for the visitors.
With the win, the Miners have also won their 30th game at home this season, which ties the franchise mark for most wins at home in a single season. They have also run their home winning streak to eleven games, four shy of their own Can-Am League mark for longest home winning streak. The Miners and Capitales will finish up their four-game weekend series tomorrow afternoon at Skylands Stadium.
