ANDRES SANTIAGO FANS EIGHT EN ROUTE TO MINERS’ VICTORY
Augusta, NJ – Sussex County endured a 1-1/2 hour rain delay to defeat the Ottawa Champions, 6-2, in the first game of the three-game series. Miner of the Game Andres Santiago pitched brilliantly, allowing no earned runs and striking out eight in his seven innings of work. The Miners (16-23) scored two runs in each of the fourth, fifth, and eighth innings and got big offensive contributions from 1B Chris Jacobs, 3B Nick Giarraputo, CF Jay Austin, and RF Dominique Taylor. The quartet each went 2-for-4 and accounted for five of the six Sussex County runs. Jacobs crushed a 2-run home run in the fourth inning, scored a run, and collected 3 RBI. Speedy Jay Austin stole his league-leading 24th base of the season and extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
Jesse Beal brought the heat in his debut for the Miners. He relieved Santiago in the eighth and blew away 2 batters with fastballs reaching 95 MPH on the radar gun. The Sussex County pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.
For Ottawa (27-21), starter Yean Carlos Gil took the loss, allowing four runs in six innings. SS Daniel Bick and DH Sebastien Boucher had 2 hits each.
