July 2, Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners (21-19) used three home runs to keep up with a potent Québec Capitales (27-16) offense, and finally put the game away on a walk-of wild pitch in the ninth to take an 8-7 win on Sunday afternoon in front of 1,091 fans at Skylands Stadium. With the win, the Miners took three out of four games against Québec, and have now won four of their last five games.

Offensively, the Miners were led by Jay Baum, who went 2-for-4 on the day. His solo home run in the second – number three on the season for Baum – gave the Miners a 3-1 lead at the time, and his two-run single in the seventh tied the game at seven. Juan Duran also contributed two hits including a solo home run, his sixth of the season. Jarred Mederos also  homered for Sussex County, his first of the campaign. Baum was at the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth and Chase McDonald on at second base from a one out double when Nolan Becker (2-1) uncorked two wild pitches. The first wild pitch sent McDonald to third base, and the second one scored McDonald with the winning run.

Quebec led early, but was trailing until the fifth, when Yurisbel Gracial hit his sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot to put Québec in front 5-4 at the time. The Capitales would hold a 7-5 lead going to the seventh before Baum tied it. From there, El’Hajj Muhammad (1-0) would keep Québec off the board, allowing one hit and striking out three in picking up the win in relief.

The Miners now start a three game series against the Trois-Rivières Aigles with Country Night on Monday night at 7:05 pm. Tickets for that and all 2017 Miners home schedule can be purchased by clicking on the link below or calling our box office at 973.940.0222.
