TEAM SECURES COME FROM BEHIND WIN ON STAR WARS NIGHT
July 1, Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners (20-19) wore special Star Wars themed jerseys on Saturday night at Skylands Stadium, and then went and used The Force in reversing an early two run deficit to defeat the Québec Capitales (27-15) 3-2 in front of 3,211 fans, many waving promotional light sabers and dressed in various Star Wars costumes. The win puts the Miner a game over .500 on the season.
Gianni Zayas (5-3) started slow, allowing two runs in the second inning – the first on a run scoring double by James McOwen – as Québec jumped out in front. But then he found his rhythm and proceeded to blank the Capitales the rest of the way. That included the top of the fifth, when he worked around a leadoff triple by Adam Ehrlich. Zayas would finish his night by striking out the last three Capitales he faced in going seven inning, allowing five hits and those two runs.
The Miners offense also started slowly against the Pointstreak Can-Am Pitcher of the Month in June, Lazaro Blanco (6-2). But after a two out walk to Jarred Mederos in the fifth, Alexi Colon ripped a triple in the right-center field gap, scoring Mederos and putting the Miners on the board. In the sixth, Nick Giarraputo led off with a double that smacked the left-center field wall. Two batters later, new Miner Chase McDonald blasted a one ball, no stike pitch deep over the wall in left field, giving the Miners a 3-2 lead.
From there, Zayas, El’Hajj Muhammad, and Mark McCoy would retire nine of the final ten Capitales that came to the plate – six of them on strikeouts – to secure the win. For McCoy, it was his third save in as many nights.
