June 30, Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners (19-19) endured a one hour, twenty-two minute rain delay early in the first game but would get a stellar pitching performance from Kenny Roder on their way to a 2-0 victory, but would fall to the Québec Capitales (27-14) in the nightcap 11-2 in front of 1,790 fans celebrating Herbie The Miner’s birthday at Skylands Stadium on Friday night.

Roder (1-0) picked up his first professional win in going five and two-thirds innings, allowing just 3 hits in the contest. He turned the game over to Mark McCoy, who retired all 4 batters he faced in picking up his second save in as many nights. Jay Baum got the game’s only run batted in, when he hit a sacrifice fly scoring Rubi Silva in the second inning. Baum would later score on a balk. Andrew Elliott (1-1), making his first start of the year, was pulled after the rain delay but was tagged with the hard luck loss as he allowed a Baum single right before the rains came.

In the nightcap, Will Mathis (1-1) was tagged for six runs on five hits and one walk in just one-third of an inning. The big blow was a three-run home run by Marcus Knecht. For the Miners, Baum went 2-for-3 in the game, and Nick Giarraputo went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Chase McDonald also scored a run for the Miners, and Nate Irving was presed into pitching duty in the seventh earning his first career strikeout in the process.. Joseph Maher (2-2) went all seven innings for Québec, allowing two unearned runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out a season high eight.

The Miners contiinue their homestand with Star Wars Night on Saturday night, July 1st, with a 7:05 pm start against the Québec Capitales. Tickets for that and all 2017 Miners home schedule can be purchased by clicking on the link below or calling our box office at 973.940.0222.
