BIG START IN EARLY INNINGS PUSH MINERS TO WIN
June 29, Little Falls, NJ – Behind steady pitching from Michael Tamburino and a 3-for-4 performance from Nick Giarraputo, the Sussex County Miners (18-18) defeated the New Jersey Jackals (23-14) by a final score of 7-5 to salvage the last game of a three-game series at Yogi Berra Stadium. The win brought the Miners back to .500 on the season.
Giarraputo was the hitting star for the Miners. He had two doubles as well as a long two-run home run, his fourth of the season, off o Jackals starting pitcher Matt Parish (3-3). Alexi Colon and Jarred Mederos each had two hits, and J.J. Fernandez hit his third home run and had two runs batted in for the Miners. Newcomer Chase McDonald also knocked home a run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. The Miners would score a run in the first, four more in the second which included the two Miners longballs, and another run in the third to jump out to a 6-0 lead after three innings of play.
Tamburino (2-3) turned in a fine performance at Yogi Berra Stadium. He went six and 1/3 innings, allowing just six hits in hi time on the mound. Tamburino also struck out a career high nine Jackals on the evening. The lone mistake Tamburino made was a solo home run hit by Brian Burgamy, his eighth of the season The Miners then deployed four relievers, with El’Hajj Muhammad getting most of the work in his two innings, before Mark McCoy got the final out to record his first save of the season.
