Miners Pitcher David Rollins

June 27, Augusta, NJ – Sussex County Miners (26-12) ace David Rollins carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning last night, and the home side’s bats put five runs on the board early as the Miners pounded the visiting Rockland Boulders by a score of 7-1 on an overcast night at Skylands Stadium.

After Rollins (5-1) worked a scoreless top half of the first inning, the Miners bats got going against Rockland starter Garrett Johnson (2-1) in the bottom half. Jayce Ray was hit by the second pitch of the game for Johnson, followed by a single by Jarred Mederos and then a run scoring single by Audy Ciriaco to make the score 1-0. Mikey Reynolds would follow with a single to load the bases, and Mederos would score on a wild pitch to double the lead..Martin Figueroa would draw a walk and, two batters later, Luis Alen would then smack a double, scoring Reynolds and Figueroa to make it 4-0 Miners. Connor Crane would be hit by a pitch, and Breland Almadova would score Rubi Silva on a tough groundout to make the score 5-0. All told, the Miners would send 11 batters to the plate in that first inning and take a 5-0 lead into the second. Two run scoring plays by Figueroa – a double in the second and a sacrifice fly in the sixth – would cap the Miners scoring on the overcast night and give them a 7-0 lead through six innings.

All of which was plenty of support for the evening’s star of the show. Rollins worked around 3 early walks to completely keep Rockland’s potent bats out of the hit column well into the night. David had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning as anticipation was high in the stadium. However, with runners on second and third from a walk and fielder’s choice error, Rollins would lose his no-hit bid on a single by Aaron Wilson that gave the game it’s final 7-1 scoreline. Rollins would punctuate the night by striking out his final two batter to go eight strong innings, allowing only the one hit and one unearned run while walking four and striking out eight. El’Hajj Muhammad would finish off the ninth to give the Miners their 26th win in the season.

The Miners and Boulders are back in action tonight to finish off the three-game series. First pitch at Skylands Stadium is set for 7:05 pm.
