MINERS DOUBLE UP BOULDERS

12-HIT ATTACK DOWN ROCKLAND

WATCH HIGHLIGHTS

June 26, Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners (25-12) put together two big innings and got a record performance out of starter Tyler Alexander (pictured) and two relievers to defeat the Rockland Boulders (21-16) by a score of 8-4 on Tuesday night at Skylands Stadium.

The Miner offense would strike in the second inning when Mikey Reynolds would single, then steal second and advance to third on a throwing error, and score two batters later on a ground out to make it 1-0 Miners. But Rockland would answer in the top of the third with a Marcus Nidiffer solo home run – his tenth of the season – to tie the game at one.

The home side would then put together a four-run flurry in the bottom of the third. Breland Almadova would lead off with a single, which would be followed by a Jayce Ray bunt single to put two on and no one out. Jarred Mederos would then drive Almadova in with an RBI single to make it 2-1 Miners. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, Martin Figueroa would be hit by a pitch to score Ray and make the score 3-1. The scoring would be capped by a Rubi Silva two-run double. The strike from the Can-Am League Player of the Week made the score 5-1 Sussex County.

Rockland would pull three of those runs back in the fifth, two of those runs coming across on a Kevin Krause home run. Howeer, the Miners would answer with three runs of their own in their half of the sixth, all coming with two outs in the inning. Five consecutive Miner hits – a Ray single, a Mederos single, then an Audy Ciriaco two-run triple, followed by a Reynolds run scoring single, would push the score to 8-4. Figueroa would cap the hitting with a single as well before the inning ended.

All of the support helped Alexander notch his sixth consecutive win for the Miners. Alexander tied a Miners club record with eleven strikeouts over his six innings of work. Kenny Koplove would then strike out five Boulders in his two innings, before  Alex Demchak would set down two on strikes to establish a Miners club record with 18 total strikeouts in a single game. It broke the mark of 17,set on July 16 of last season at New Jersey in an eleven inning loss.

The Miners and Boulders are back in action tomorrow night at 7:05 pm at Skylands Stadium. Tomorrow night is also Medieval Times night at the Stadium.
