CUBAN RALLY SPOILS SANTIAGO’S STELLAR OUTING

MINERS’ BULLPEN BLOWS 9TH INNING LEAD

Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners cruised through eight innings before losing in a heartbreaker, 6-4. Starter RHP Andres Santiago (pictured) pitched eight stellar innings, limiting the Cuban National Team to just one run on seven hits. Santiago (1-1) had excellent command, striking out six and walking just one. With the Miners up 4-1 in the top of the ninth, closer RHP Josh Wood (1-1) fell victim to a furious Cuban rally. Wood was tagged with five runs in his one inning of work and suffered the loss.

In the bottom of the first, CF Jay Austin looped a two-out single into left and then stole second. 1B Chris Jacobs was hit by a pitch to put two on with two out. 2B Steve Nyisztor then drilled a single through the shortstop to give Sussex County a 1-0 lead. LF Carl Thomore and 3B Nick Giarraputo followed up with consecutive RBI singles and extended the Miners lead to 3-0.

Cuba got on the board in the fourth with 2B Juan Torriente’s RBI single. Sussex County got that run back in the home half of the inning after C Elvin Soto smashed a triple into center and then scored on a wild pitch.

After four scoreless innings, Sussex County took a 4-1 lead into the ninth. While the Cuban National Team could not solve Santiago, they lit up Josh Wood. With two on and no out, 3B Raul Gonzalez hit an RBI single to cut the Miners lead in half. 2B Juan Torrent singled to trim the advantage to 4-3. Cuba took their first lead of the game on a two-RBI double by CF Yoelvis Fiss, who scored himself on a single by SS Yorbi Borroto.

Cuba’s starter, RHP Vladimir Banos, was chased after just one inning. RHP Yayfredo Dominguez struck out six in a marathon 7.1 innings of relief work to pick up the win. LHP Livan Moinelo kept the Miners off the board in the ninth for his first save of the International Series.

For Sussex County, Elvin Soto recorded his third triple of the season in the loss. Jay Austin scored a run and added to his record single-season stolen base total with 16. Steve Nyisztor went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Carl Thomore had a 2-for-3 night at the plate and collected an RBI.
