MINERS EDGED BY CAPITALES, 6-5

SUSSEX COUNTY UNABLE TO HOLD LATE LEAD, DROP SERIES

Québec City, Canada – The Québec Capitales scored two runs in the seventh inning to slide past the Sussex County Miners, 6-5. Capitales’ reliever Ryan Leach earned the win while closer Jon Fitzsimmons got the save after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings. RF Yeicok Calderon went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Québec (19-10) offense. 1B Jordan Lennerton and SS Yurisbel Gracial combined for five hits and three runs scored. Both teams tallied 11 hits, but the Capitales’ late runs were the difference in the contest.

Sussex County (13-17) got on the board in the top of the first with Chris Jacobs‘ ground out RBI. Québec then scored three unanswered runs before RF Dominique Taylor knocked in 3B/C Elvin Soto in the fifth. The Capitales responded with a run in the home half of that inning to double up the Miners, 4-2. In the sixth, Jay Austin scored on LF Carl Thomore‘s sacrifice fly to make it 4-3. The Miners took the lead, 5-4, in the seventh with Ryan Dent‘s ground out RBI and Austin’s RBI single. Austin stole second and third but Jacobs struck out to end the inning.

Michael Suk (3-2) labored through six innings, but kept the Miners in the game. The Blairstown, NJ native threw 118 pitches and allowed eight hits, three earned runs, three walks, and struck out three for a no-decision. Drew Cisco came in to relieve Suk in the seventh, but could not hold the lead. Québec scored two runs on three straight hits and went up 6-5. Cisco pitched a 1-2-3 eighth to give Sussex County a chance for a rally. The Miners threatened in the ninth, but stranded runners on second and third.

Player of the game Dominique Taylor went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. CF Jay Austin had a 2-for-5 night and set a new Miners single-season record for stolen bases with 15. He is now hitting .325 on the year. Chris Jacobs and Carl Thomore each picked up an RBI. Elvin Soto was 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run.
