SOLID PITCHING IN OPENER, WALK-OFF IN NIGHTCAP
June 17, Augusta, NJ – With rain postponing yesterday’s scheduled game, the Sussex County Miners (13-14) went about and swept a doubleheader tonight from the Trois-Rivières Aigles (10-18), winning the opener 2-1 and the nightcap 5-4 in nine innings in front of 2,070 fans on Fireworks Night at Skylands Stadium. The pair of wins extended the Miners run to six wins in their last seven games.
In the first game, Kris Regas (4-2) threw five and one-third innings, allowing one run on five hits. Rubi Silva, who had two hits in the game, would score the winning run on an error by the pitcher Edilson Alvarez (2-3) in the bottom of the fourth. The bullpen combination of El’Hajj Muhammad and Kody Kerski would set down the last five Aigles, with Kerski earning his first save of the season.
In the second game, the Miners would jump out to leads of 2-0 and 4-1 behind solid hitting from Jay Austin and J.J. Fernandez, who both had two hits and a run scored. Adron Chambers RBI single through a drawn in inield gave the Miners a three run edge in the fifth. But Trois-Rivières would come back with a run in the sixth on a Connor Crane solo home run, and then two in the seventh on a two-run single by Julio Martinez, which tied the game at four apiece. The game wore on to the ninth, where the Miners would load the bases. That’s when Justin Trapp would lace a single up the middle to win it for Sussex County. Andrew Brockett (2-0) would pick up the win, while Miguel Lahera (0-1) would get tagged with the loss.
