MINERS RUN PAST BOULDERS

OPEN UP TWO GAME CUSHION FOR TOP SPOT

June 13, Pomona, NY – The Sussex County Miners (17-9) used a pair of three run innings to take down the Rockland Boulders (13-13) by a score of 8-3 on Wednesday night at Palisades Credit Union Park. With this victory, the Miners now have won two in a row and have continued to stay hot on the road where they have won seven of their last ten.

The Miners wasted no time getting runs on the board, getting things going in the first inning. Sussex County took advantage of a leadoff walk to Jayce Ray and a sacrifice/fielders choice off the bat of Johnny Ruiz to set up a scorching RBI double by Audy Ciriaco for their first run of the game. Despite that being their only hit of the frame, the Miners managed to push across two more runs to lead 3-0 after the first three outs of the contest.

The heart of the Miners order erupted in the third inning and showed the road crowd why they have the number one offense in the Can-Am League. Ciriaco struck drove in Ray yet against and was followed up by Mikey Reynolds and Martin Figueroa, who hit a sac fly and RBI single respectively, to double Sussex County’s advantage at 6-0.

After a Luis Alen RBI increased the Miners’ number on the scoreboard, the Boulders gave their home crowd something to cheer for. Marcus Nidiffer hit a solo home run to cut the score to 7-1, and in the bottom off the seventh inning Mikael Mogues and Mike Montville hit back-to-back home runs to cut the Miners’ lead down to 7-3. The Miners would tack on insurance in the eighth, scoring one more time and locking the score in at 8-3.

Tyler Alexander (4-0) had another strong outing and kept his perfect record clean, earning the win while allowing three runs on five hits and striking out eight − his second highest total of the season. Justin Topa (1-1) took the loss in this one, scattering six hits over seven s of work while allowing seven runs (five earned). Alex Demchak  pitched a scoreless ninth to close pout the game and keep his ERA at a pristine 0.00.

These two team will wrap up their series tomorrow night at 7:00pm in Rockland before the Miners return home for a weekend series against the Ottawa Champions.
