MINERS COME BACK TWICE IN WALK-OFF WIN

DOWN 5-0 IN 8TH, MINERS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT

June 11, Augusta, NJ – For seven innings, the Sussex County Miners (10-13) were stymied by the pitching of Robinson Lopez. But then, the home side got to the Dominican Republic National Team‘s (0-3) bullpen, setting the stage for a wild 9-8 come-from-behind victory on a hot Sunday afternoon in front of 1,606 fans at Skylands Stadium. The win gave the Miners a sweep of their visitors from the Dominican Republic in the three game series.

The Miners were trailing 5-0 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, thanks to the two hit, two run batted in performance of Edward Salcedo and seven innings of three hit, three walk, seven strikeout pitching from Lopez. Salcedo’s fifth inning home run gave the Dominican Republic a 5-0 lead on Miners starter Ari Kaufman. But the Miners would strike back against five different relievers in the eighth inning, alone, scoring seven runs in the home half of the eighth. The Dominican Republic scored three runs in the ninth, with two coming from a two-out single from Gilbert Gomez, but the Miners would once again show resiliency and score twice in the bottom of the ninth. Jarred Mederos‘ one out single scored Alexi Colon and set off a wild celebration behind second base.

The offensive stars for the Miners were Rubi SIlva, who had a triple among three hits and 2 runs batted in, and Jay Austin, who had two hits and three runs batted in. Kody Kerski (1-0), despite not having allowed an earned run in the ninth, got the win for the Miners. Luis Nunez took the loss for the Dominican Republic.
