RECORD SETTING WIN FOR MINERS

SET MARKS FOR RUNS, MARGIN IN 18-2 WHITEWASHING OF DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

June 9, Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners (14-8) set teams records in runs and margin of victory on Star Wars Night as they pounded the Dominican Republic 18-2 in front of 3,239 Rebel Alliance fans at Skylands Stadium.

The Miners put three runs across in the first inning courtesy of a Mikey Reynolds two run triple and a Martin Figueroa RBI single. The 3-0 scoreline after the first inning would increase to 7 an inning later, as a Jarred Mederos sacrifice fly was followed by another two run triple, this time by Figueroa. Luis Alen smacked a RBI single one batter later to set the score at 7-0 after two innings of play.

After the Domincan Republic plated two runs of their own on a two run triple by Henry Castillo, the home side would tack on another run in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 10-2 lead going into the sixth inning. That when the Miners would score three more times, capped by a two run double by Jayce Ray, then follow it up with five more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a Ray two run single.

In the end offensively, every Miner starter crossed home plate at least once, with Reynolds and Breland Almadova each scoring three times. Alen, Figueroa, Audy Ciriaco, and Christian Correa each scored twice as well for Sussex County, with Ray collecting three hits and five RBIs,and Figueroa getting four hits and three RBIs

AS for the pitching, Miners starter Gianni Zayas (2-2) cruised through seven innings in his best start of the season. Zayas allowed just two runs on two hits, both of those coming in the third inning. He walked two batters and struck out a career-high ten in earning the win. Mark McCoy and Kevin Grendell each threw an inning of flawless relief to finish the game out for Sussex County.

The Miners and Dominican Republic will meet ffor the final game in the three-game weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 pm.
