MINERS STIFLE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

5 PITCHERS HOLD VISITORS TO 4 HITS

June 9, Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners (8-13) used five pitchers to hold the visiting Dominican Republic National Team (0-1) to just four hits en route to an 8-0 victory on Friday night in front of 1,924 fans at Skylands Stadium. With the win, the Miners halted their losing streak at three games.

Offensively, the Miners were paced by Jarred Mederos, who went 2 for 3, scoring twice and knocking home three runs. Adron Chambers and Jay Austin both had triples in the first inning, and would each score to get the Miners in the lead in the opening frame. Justin Trapp also had two hits and two stolen bases for Sussex County.

Gianni Zayas got the start for the Miners and went 4 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and walking two, while striking out five. He would turn the game over the Will Mathis (1-0), who got out of the bases loaded jam he inherited by striking out Nelson Perez to end the fifth. From there, the Miners would pull away, saddling Starling Peralta (0-1) with the loss.
