MINERS CAPITALIZE AGAINST DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

TIMELY HITTING, ADVANTAGEOUS PLAY LEAD TO 10-4 WIN

June 8, Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners (13-8) took advantage of several Dominican Republic (0-1) errors and came up with timely plays as they defeated the visitors by a score of 10-4 in front of 1,751 Sussex County Day fans at Skylands Stadium on Friday night.

After 2 unearned runs crossed the plate in the top of the first inning, the Miners clawed back. They got a run in the bottom of the first on a RBI double by Mikey Reynolds, and then leveled the score in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Martin Figueroa.

The Miners would then take the lead in the bottom of the fifth, an inning in which the Miners would score three runs on just one hit. The hit – an Audy Ciriaco single – would give the Miners a 3-2 lead. A Figueroa walk and a  sac fly by John Schultz would push the advantage to 5-2 for Sussex County.

The home side would put the game away in the seventh. Ciriaco and Reynolds would start the inning off with singles, with Reynolds, Figueroa, and Schultz coming around to score on three Dominican errors to make the score 8-4 for the Miners. Sussex County would tack on two more runs in the eighth on doubles by Ciriaco and Figueroa to push the score to 10-4.

The support was more than enough for Tyler Alexander (3-0). After the two unearned runs in the first inning, Alexander got into a rhythm and pitched efficiently, punding the strike zone against the Dominican Republic to the tune of nine strikeouts and just one base on balls. He left after seven innings, allowing just two earned runs in picking up the win. Kenny Koplove and Brent Jones would throw scoreless relief in the eighth and ninth to finish out the game.

The Miners and Dominican Republic are back in action tomorrow night, facing off on Star Wars Night at Skylands Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:05 pm.
