RODRIGUEZ, CISCO COMBINE TO HOLD JACKALS TO 7 HITS, SNAP THEIR WIN STREAK
Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners (9-9) got solid pitching from both starter Francisco Rodriguez and reliever Drew Cisco, highlight defensive plays from John Brucker and Michael Antonio, and a balanced offensive attack led by Nate Irving’s first two hits and RBI in a Miners uniform as the home side defeated the visiting New Jersey Jackals 5-1 at Skylands Stadium on Tuesday night.
Six different Miners collected hits off of Jackal pitching. Irving led the way with two singles and two RBIs. The Miners also got run scoring hits from Steve Nyisztor and Jay Austin. Carl Thomore also reached base twice, stole two bags, and scored both times.
The Jackals (14-5) also had seven hits, with three of them coming from Rylan Sandoval. Sandoval also drove in the game’s only run when he knocked home former Miner Johnny Bladel, who went 1-for-3. Art Charles, who had a Can-Am record six hits in last night’s contest, went 1-for-3 tonight, with Antonio taking away extra bases from Charles on a drive in the third inning.
Francisco Rodriguez went six strong innings, scattering six hits. He walked two batters and struck out seven. He then turned the game over to Drew Cisco, who pitched the final three innings allowing only one hit and striking out four batters of the ten he faced.
With the win, the Miners improve to 9-9 on the season, while the Jackals had their 10-game winning streak ended tonight and drop to 14-5. The Jackals still hold a 2.5-game lead in the Can-Am League over Rockland and Quebec, while the Miners sit in 4th place, 4.5 games behind New Jersey.
The Miners and Jackals will wrap up their three-game series Wednesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM at Skylands Stadium. Michael Suk is the scheduled starter for the Miners, while long time Jackal Isaac Pavlik is slated to start for New Jersey.
