DROP 3-1 DECISION, KAUFMAN 7 STRONG INNINGS
June 6, Augusta, NJ – In a matchup of the two best ERAs in the Can-Am League, Isaac Pavlik outdueled Ari Kaufman as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Sussex County Miners 3-1 in front of 2,172 School Day fans at Skylands Stadium.
The ptichers duel lived up to its billing. Pavlik (3-0) threw six innings of shutout ball, striking out five. Kaufman (0-2) was also impressive, allowing just two runs on seven hits in his seven innings of work. Those two runs came after a rain delay of two hours, twelve minutes. When play resumed in the Jackals second inning, Yariel Vargas would hit a two-out, two-run single to give New Jersey the lead.
The Miners lone run would come in the seventh, when Rubi Silva would reach with his second bunt single of the game. He would steal second and score on a run scoring ground out. Johnny Hellweg would get in a bit of a bind in the ninth, allowing back-to-back singles to Jay Austin and Juan Duran, but would retire the next 3 Miners in order to get his fifth save of the season.
The Miners return on Friday night, June 9, when the Dominican Republic National Team makes their first appearance at Skylands Stadium to open International play.
