MINERS CONTINUE HOT START

DUNCAN, ZAHARION HELP SUSSEX COUNTY TO ROAD WIN

May 28, Trois-Rivieres, QC – The Sussex County Miners (9-2) got a stellar complete game outing from Frank Duncanand a big night from Nick Zaharion as the Miners defeated the Trois-Rivieres Aigles (4-8) by a final score of 6-2 on Tuesday night at Stade Stereo+.

The Miners would strike first in the 2nd inning when Jose Brizuela would take a pitch from Aigles starter Chris Murphy opposite field, going over the left-center field wall for his 3rd home run of the season and gave the Miners a 1-0 lead. But the Aigles would jump in front in the 3rd inning, thanks to a Tucker Nathans sacrifice fly and a 2-out Michael Suchy single, giving the home side a 2-1 lead after 3 innings of play.

But in just the next half inning, the Miners would go in front to stay. Can-Am League Player of the Week Trey Hair led off with a single.3 batters later, Andy Paz would single as well, setting the stage for Zaharion. The Miners RF took a 1-0 pitch down the 3rd base line and into the left field corner to score both Hair and Paz to put the Miners back on top 3-2. Nicholas Shumpert would then follow with an RBI single to make the score 4-2 Miners.

The Miners would extend their lead in the 8th inning when, with Hair on at 1st base and Jarred Mederos on at 3rd, Manager Bobby Jones would go for a delayed double steal. Hair took off for 2nd base. When catcher Anthony Hermelyn‘s throw went to 2nd base, Mederos took off for home and made it without a throw. Hair stopped and made it safely back to 1st, and the Susse County lead was 5-2.

Zaharion would then cap the scoring in the 9th inning with a long solo home run – his 2nd of the season – to give the Miners the 6-2 lead.

While the offense was doing their part, Duncan would keep the Aigles off the board in the final 6 innings. The Miners right-hander would go the distance, allowing just the 2 runs in the 2nd inning. He gave up a total of 7 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 7 batters. Duncan retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced.

The win put Jones above the .500 mark for the first time in his managerial career, as the Miners hot start gave him win number 156, all coming in Sussex County. Duncan (1-1) got the complete game win, while Murphy (0-2) took his 2nd loss in as many outings against the Miners this season.
