5 RUN 8TH GIVES FANS EARLY FIREWORKS
May 27, Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners erased a three-run deficit with a five run eighth inning to come from behind and defeat the Ottawa Champions 5-3 on Saturday night in front of 2,571 fans at Skylands Stadium on Fireworks Night.
Miners starting pitcher Ari Kaufman danced in and out of trouble in his five innings of work, conceding just one earned run, which came on a Matt Helms single. Kaufman allowed seven hits and six walks in his five innings. Ottawa pushed their lead to 3-0 on a Daniel Grauer double off of Michael Suk. Gianni Zayas (1-2) pitched a scoreless eighth, setting up the bottom half of the inning when the Miners would string together six hits off of 3 different pitchers in posting five runs in the bottom of the eighth. Clutch run scoring hits from Juan Duran and J.J. Fernandez cut the Ottawa lead to 3-2. Then Justin Trapp (pictured) laced a two-run single off of Victor Beriguete to put Sussex County in front. Nate Irving added an insurance run with a single of his own. Andrew Brockett struck out two Champions in the ninth to earn his first save as a Miner.
For the second straight night, all nine Miners batters recorded at least one hit, as Sussex County wrapped out another thirteen hits in the contest. Ricky Oropesa had three hits for Ottawa, who as a team knocked twelve hits out of their own. Yean Carlos Gil (0-1) pitched well in going one out into the eighth, but ended up getting tagged with the loss.
