MINERS DROP SLUGFEST TO TROIS-RIVIÈRES, 8-6
Trois-Rivières, Québec – Home runs by LF Carl Thomore, C Elvin Soto, and 1B Chris Duffy were not enough as the Trois-Rivières Aigles (2-3) came from behind to defeat the Sussex County Miners (2-3) 8-6 in front of 1,488 fans at Stade Fernand-Bédard tonight.
The Miners quickly jumped on Aigles starting pitcher Luis Munoz for 3 runs in the first, all on balls that left the yard. 3 pitches into the game, Thomore launched a ball over the fence in straightaway center field to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. The next batter was Soto, and he pulled one over the wall in left field to double the Sussex County lead. Three batters later, Duffy went opposite field for his 2nd home run in as many games to increase the cushion to 3-0. The three home runs in the first innings matched the output of the entire season to date for the Miners.
But Trois-Rivières came right back in the bottom of the first. 3B Eric Grabe led the home half of the 1st off with a solo shot of his own, 2B Jesus Merchan would reach on an error before being pulled from the game by pinch runner Reed Lavallee, and C Kyle Lafrenz would double Lavallee home to cut the lead to 3-2. A sacrifice fly by RF Daniel Mateo tied the score at 3.
The Miners would retake the lead in the 2nd when Carl Thomore beat out a potential double play ball, scoring CF Jay Austin, who had singled to lead off the inning. The lead would expand in the 3rd when DH Joe Dunigan doubled, took 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout by 3B Nick Giarraputo. The Miners would further increase the advantage in the 5th with a two-out rally. Giarraputo walked, went to third on a Duffy single, and scored on 2B Ryan Lashley’s double. The Miners bid for more came to an end, however, when Duffy was thrown out at home on a solid relay from Munoz to Lafrenz waiting at home plate.
Trois-Rivières would scratch 2 runs back in the bottom of the 5th on the heels of two walks and two singles issued by RHP Michael Tamburino. Tamburino, who came on in relief of starting RHP Joe Donino, then mowed down the next three batters on strikeouts to escape further damage and keep the Miners lead at 6-5.
But the Aigles would take the lead in the 7th off of RHP Drew Cisco. Kyle Lafrenz led off with a double, and would eventually score along with Mateo when DH Joel Carranza hit a scorcher off of Giarraputo and down the line in left. Delvin Morales would add an infield single to put the score at 8-6. RHP Kaohi Downing would eventually come on in the 9th to record his first save of the season.
With the win, Trois-Rivières improves to 2-3 on the season, while the loss drops Sussex County to 2-3. The Miners and Aigles square off again tomorrow at 7:05 pm with RHP Michael Suk scheduled to start for the Miners. The Aigles are scheduled to counter with Matthew Rusch.
