Miners Acquire Pitcher Tyler Alexander

April 18, Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners made it official this week when the ballclub signed left-handed pitcher Tyler Alexander to a contract, bolstering their starting rotation ahead of the season opener on May 17th at the Rockland Boulders. The Miners had initially acquired the reversionary rights to the two-time American Association All-Star in a trade with Lincoln of the American Association, who had acquired those rights from Fargo-Moorhead just days prior.

The 26-year-old Alexander was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 27th round of the 2013 MLB Entry Draft out of Florida International University. After spending two seasons in the Brewers organization, Alexander signed on with Fargo-Moorhead in 2015. He would pitch three seasons with the Redhawks, compiling a 25-16 record, with a sparkling 2.91 ERA in 64 total appearances over the three seasons. 55 of those 64 appearances were starts. Last season with Fargo-Moorhead, Alexander went 8-6 on the year, with a minuscule 2.07 ERA in 21 starts.

Tyler is simply put a strikeout machine, having fanned 434 batters in 402 2/3 innings pitched in three seasons of indpendent ball. Last season, Tyler struck out 167 batters, which not only set the American Association single-season record, it also marked the highest single season strikeout total in any independent league. In his independent baseball career, his strikeouts-per-9 innings ratio stands at 9.70, while his strikeouts-to-walks ratio is at a 2.87. Alexander has never had a strikeouts-per-9 ratio below 9, as the closest he came was 111 strikeouts in 111 innings in his first year with Fargo-Moorhead.

Alexander also brings longevity to the Skylands Stadium. Last season, Alexander averaged a shade over seven innings pitched per start and overall Tyler averages nearly 6 1/3 innings per outing and a tick above seven innings per start over the past three seasons. Tyler pitched at least six innings in all but one start last season, and he threw seven innings or more in 15 of 21 starts with four complete games. Two of his four complete games were of the nine-inning variety.

Miners Director of Baseball Operations and Manager Bobby Jones is excited about the newest arm on his staff. “Pitcher of the Year in the American Association in 2017,” Jones said. “(Tyler was) the most dominating pitcher in that league, and probably in indy ball period.”

Last year, Michael Tamburino – who was part of the package that was sent to Lincoln to acquire the reversionary rights for Alexander – set the Miners single season strikeout mark at 115 in 116 2/3 innings pitched. That is a mark that immediately is within reach for the newest Miner. “167 strikeouts in 148 innings is on another level,” added Jones.

Now Alexander looks to join Miners All-Star Gianni Zayas on what is looking to be a formidable rotation for Sussex County as they enter their 4th season of play in the Can-Am League.
