JAY AUSTIN SELECTED TO 2016 ALL-STAR TEAM

AUSTIN TO REPRESENT MINERS AS PART OF CAN-AM DELEGATION

Augusta, NJJay Austin has been selected as the Sussex County Miners representative for the American Association All-Star Game to take place on August 2, 2016 at CHS Field in St. Paul, Minnesota. The roster was announced by Miles Wolff, the Commissioner of both the Can-Am League and American Association.

Austin will be part of the South All-Stars team, which will be a combination of players from the six teams in the Can-Am League: the Miners along with the Rockland Boulders, New Jersey Jackals, Trois-Rivières Aigles, Québec Capitales, and Ottawa Champions—as well as the four teams in the South Division in the American Association—Joplin Blasters, Laredo Lemurs, Texas AirHogs, and Wichita Wingnuts.

Miners manager Bobby jones was certainly pleased with the selection of Austin to the squad. “It’s a blessing,” Jones said of Austin’s selection. “He deserves it, he’s played great pretty much the whole season, so if there’s anyone that deserves to make (the All-Star team), he’s definitely the guy.”

“It’s a big, a good accomplishment,” said Austin of his selection. “All the hard work I’ve put in this offseason kind of panned out this season, so it’s great to make it.”

With his 2-for-4 outing in Thursday night’s (July 21) 6-5 win against Rockland, Austin now has an 18 game hitting streak and is batting .336 (76 for 226) for the Miners. Jay also has 28 stolen bases, good for second in the Can-Am League, and his 128 putouts are the most among outfielders in the league.

The consistency that Austin puts out on a nightly basis is certainly seen by Jones. “He’s been a spark plug pretty much all year, since we’ve stuck him in the 3 hole,” said Jones. “He’s been there, he’s been hitting, he’s been doing his thing ever since we stuck him there. It’s a blessing. Without that, I don’t know where we would be. But he sparks us and he gets us going.”

The Can-Am selections were made by Rockland manager Jamie Keefe, who will serve as a coach on the AA South All-Stars. The South Division All-Stars were selected by Laredo Lemurs manager, former MLB slugger Pete Incaviglia. The North All-Stars, comprised of the eight teams in the North and Central Divisions of the American Association, will be announced tomorrow afternoon.
