BIG WIN IN FRONT OF BIG CROWD
August 19, Augusta, NJ – The Sussex County Miners (38-44) sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning and scored three times, and used that push to cruise past the New Jersey Jackals (48-38) by a score of 11-3 in a lengthy Ladies Night and Fireworks Night game in front of 4,212 fans at Skylands Stadium. Coupled with the Ottawa Champions 6-1 loss to the Quebec Capitales, the Miners now hold a 2 1/2 game lead over Ottawa for the fourth and final playoff spot.
The Miners were paced by two doubles and three runs batted in from Nate Irving, and two hits apiece from Alexi Colon and Jay Baum. The Miners scored three runs in the first, fifth, and eighth innings off of Jackals starter Andres Caceres and two relievers. Billy Roth threw five innings to pick up the win for Sussex County, allowing two runs on five hits over those five innings. Baum also started a highlight reel double play to end the top of the seventh inning.
The Miners continue their playoff push with the finale of a three-game series against in-state rivals the New Jersey Jackals on Family Fun Sunday beginning at 4:05 pm.
